SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD SUBMISSION

We invite all employees, companies, sites, and contractors within the Australian resources industry—including minerals, coal, quarries, exploration, oil, and energy sectors—who are associated with the Queensland resources industry to participate in the Safety Innovation Awards.

PURPOSE OF THE SAFETY INNOVATION AWARDS

As part of the Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference, the Safety Innovation Awards recognize creative and practical solutions that address safety challenges. These awards aim to promote the adoption of innovative approaches across the Queensland resources sector.

For the purpose of these awards, “Safety” is broadly defined as either:

  • A new initiative that enhances safety outcomes.
  • An original solution to a specific safety challenge.

SUBMITTING YOUR SAFETY INNOVATION AWARD

Prior to submitting the Innovation Award application, please refer to submission guidelines. To submit your application, please click on the Submit button below, which will take you to the online portal.

To log into the portal and submit your innovation, you will need to create a new account.

The Winner will receive:

  • The opportunity to nominate one person involved in the safety innovation’s development to attend the A+A Trade Exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany (November 2025) as a guest of our prize award sponsor, uvex.
  • A Queensland Mining Industry Safety Innovation Award Trophy.
  • A Framed Certificate.

The People’s Choice and Highly Commended awardees will receive:

  • A Queensland Mining Industry Safety Innovation Award Trophy.
  • A Framed Certificate.

The remaining finalists will be presented with a Framed Certificate in recognition of their achievement.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
  • More than one submission may be considered
  • Submissions must cover creative and practical solutions to safety and occupational health problems
  • Submission text must not exceed 1500 words
  • Description should address the submission criteria and use the same sub-headings as outlined in the judging criteria section
  • Do not include the presentation title, author names or affiliations in the text box, as these details will be captured during the submission process via the submission portal
  • All abbreviations must be spelled out on first use
  • Scientific names must be italicised
  • Submissions are to be uploaded as pdf document.
  • Submissions should be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar, as if successful, will be included in the conference app

To ensure your presentation is included in QMIHSC 2025 program, successful presenters will require to have a paid registration for the conference by 4 July 2025. If you do register by this date, your submission may be withdrawn.

Travel and accommodation are not included, and it will be at your expense.

The problem: Score value – 10%
Provide a brief description of the identified problem, or where a process has been improved, describe how the initiative or improvement opportunity was identified.

Submissions will be judged on:

  • How the problem has been identified and the safety and health consequences that have been addressed
  • Where no problem exists, how the initiative identified improvement opportunities

The solution: Score value – 30%
Describe the strategies and initiatives developed to identify and address the problem or improve the current system, including:

  • The internal/external resources used in the process
  • Methods used in trialling and testing
  • Implementation process – where/how on site
  • Demonstrate how the hierarchy of control has been applied

Benefits/Effects: Score value – 20%
Explain the safety and/or occupational health benefits.
You should provide any supporting data or other evidence that demonstrates the benefits/effects that were achieved and describe the extent of deployment across the site.

Transferability: Score value – 10%
Describe the potential for the innovation to be used, modified or transferred across the resources industry and how this could be achieved.

Innovation: Score value – 30%
Describe the originality of the innovation.

Approximate cost
A statement of approximate cost, if known, should be included. While there are no strict requirements to demonstrate cost effectiveness, where it is otherwise difficult to separate nominations, the judging panel may use this to help decide the ultimate winner.

The Safety Innovation Awards follow a two-round judging process:

1. Preliminary judging round:

  • All submissions are reviewed by a Judging Panel consisting of industry representatives.
  • The panel selects a shortlist of five finalists to advance to the next round

2. Final Judging Round

  • The five finalists will present their Safety Innovation at the Conference.
  • Each finalist will have up to 10 minutes maximum to present their submission to conference delegates and the Judging Panel.
  • The panel may ask follow-up questions about each safety innovation.
  • Winner – Selected by the Judging Panel.
  • People’s Choice – Voted by Conference delegates.
  • Highly Commended – Based on combined votes from the Judging Panel and Conference delegates.

Should your award presentation submission be shortlisted, it will be published in the conference website and conference app. We recommend you proof your submission well prior to submitting.

The presentation must not be of a commercial nature or directly advertise or promote commercial products or services.

You will be allocated up to 10 minutes for your presentation and additional 5 minutes for Q&A from judging panel during conference program on Monday 18 August 2025.

Additional to the presentation, you take up on the complimentary option of:

  • Poster display
    Everyone who provides a submission is encouraged to prepare a poster for displaying at conference. Dedicated times will be set aside for authors to engage more closely with delegates.
    Guidelines for preparing posters will be provided.
  • Static demonstration
    Space will be set aside in the event centre gallery for those finalists whose innovation lends itself to a small static demonstration. Please indicate your intention on the submission portal. More details will be provided to those taking up this option.

You will be able to save your awards submission as a draft and return to it at any time for editing before completing your submission. Once you have submitted your document, you will not be able to edit it.

PURPOSE OF THE HEALTH INNOVATION AWARD

As part of the Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference, the Health Awards recognize creative and practical solutions that address Health challenges. These awards aim to promote the adoption of innovative approaches across the Queensland resources sector.

For the purpose of these awards, “Health” is broadly defined as either:

  • A new program/initiative that enhances health outcomes.
  • An original solution to a specific health challenge.

SUBMITTING YOUR HEALTH INNOVATION AWARD

HEALTH AWARD SCOPE

This award honours the Health Program or Innovation that has led to the most significant improvement in workers’ health. A Health Program or Innovation may be an initiative or an ongoing effort addressing a specific health issue, demonstrating tangible benefits to workers in the resources sector.

Eligible programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Lifestyle programs supporting workers’ physical and mental well-being.
  • Occupational health hazard solutions that effectively minimize workers’ exposure by managing hazards at their source or disrupting their pathway, providing long-term, measurable benefits (e.g., noise reduction, dust reduction, WBV reduction, ergonomic improvements, etc).
  • Implementation of innovative occupational health initiatives that contribute to a safer work environment. (e.g. fitness-for-duty programs, healthy eating initiatives, psychosocial or occupational health hazard reduction programs, etc).

Submissions outside these categories are also encouraged, provided they demonstrate clear benefits to workers’ health.

While programs do not need to be fully completed, entries must showcase more than a concept—demonstrating a level of implementation and tangible progress.

AWARDS & RECOGNITION

The Winner will receive:

  • A Perpetual Trophy
  • A Health Program Trophy
  • A Framed Certificate

The People’s Choice and Highly Commended awardees will receive:

  • A Queensland Mining Industry Health Program Trophy.
  • A Framed Certificate.

The remaining finalists will be presented with a Framed Certificate in recognition of their achievement.

The problem: Score value – 10%
Describe the identified problem or explain how the initiative or health improvement opportunity was identified.

Submissions will be judged on how clearly the problem and the health consequences are identified.

Where no specific problem existed, the submission should clearly describe how the initiative identified and provided opportunities to improve workers’ health.

The solution: Score value – 40%
Describe what was done to implement the program or initiative. Applications that demonstrate there was significant input, initiative and ownership at the site level will be scored higher than those where the program is developed and implemented solely by an external provider.

The submission should include a clear description of the strategies and initiatives that were developed to identify and address the problem or what was done to otherwise improve an existing system.

Examples of the type of information that could be provided include:

  • The internal/external resources that were used in the process
  • Implementation process – where and how the program was achieved and on what scale – including potential participation or target audience size and actual participation
  • How workers were engaged in the program to foster a feeling of ownership of the initiative
  • How the initiative has been measured for effectiveness and/or the results verified

Benefits/Effects: Score value – 30%
Explain the health benefits of the Program and where appropriate, describe the extent of deployment across the site/company.

You should provide any supporting data or other evidence that demonstrates the benefits/effects that were achieved.

Transferability: Score value – 20%
Describe the potential for the health program to be used, modified or transferred across the resources industry and how this could be achieved.

The Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference Legends Award was established by the conference committee in 2017 to recognise persons in the Queensland mining industry who have made substantial, sustained and significant improvements to health and safety in the Queensland mining industry.

NOMINATION

Nominations are now OPEN.

To submit a nomination, please email the conference organiser on qmihsc@expertevents.com.au with the subject heading: 2025 Legends Award nomination and include the following details:

  • Name and contact details of the person making the nomination
  • Name and contact details of the nominee
  • An overview of what the nominee has achieved in improving health and safety in the Queensland mining industry
  • Reasons why the nominee should be recognised as a Mining Legend.

Nominations close on Monday 14 April 2025 and will be reviewed by the conference committee, using a predetermined scoresheet to select up to two winners – one from the coal and one from the minerals sectors.
